As head instructor at Camal Judo, I have some very large shoes to fill after the passing of my Sensei, Anthony “Tony” Camal. I, hopefully, come with a wealth of experience spanning over 55 years in the sport. Starting back in 1972, my first instructor was Sensei Bill Camal in Fort Lee. Years later, Tony Camal opened Camal Judo. Fast forward, and here we are.
As a judoka, I have not only dedicated myself to the practice and teaching of judo but have also played a pivotal role on the international stage. I served as the manager for the Team USA Judo Olympic Teams in both 2012 and 2016, where the team achieved an unprecedented level of success—winning 2 gold medals, 1 silver, and 1 bronze—the best results in the history of USA Judo. In 2016, I was awarded the "Ekonok" Coaching Award from Travis Stevens, the 2016 Olympic Silver Medalist. What an honor that was for me—something I will never forget.
My competitive history goes back to the early 1970s, where I won hundreds of trophies and medals at the local, regional, and national levels. I wrapped up my competitive career in 2006, placing 3rd at the Veterans World Championships in Mississauga, Canada.
Guided by the fundamental philosophy of judo, I live my life based on mutual respect and the welfare of others. These principles are deeply embedded in my teaching, fostering an environment where students are encouraged to grow not only as athletes but as individuals who embody the spirit of judo, both on and off the mat. With a focus on discipline, technical mastery, and personal growth, I now bring these values into my instruction, ensuring that each student experiences the full breadth of judo’s physical and mental benefits at Camal Judo.
